Legal aspects of rail travel Penalties

I've been given a penalty that I feel is unfair. Do I have to pay the penalty?

A penalty or additional fare can generally be issued. If you feel that the penalty is unfair, you can lodge an appeal with the railway company or transport alliance concerned within one month. The company must answer this question at least once before further action can be taken (e.g. involving a debt collection agency).

If your payment is not received on time, the company must send you a reminder before further action can be taken.

If you can prove that you have a valid personalised ticket, the penalty must be reduced to a maximum of 10%.

It is recommended you contact the railway company or transport alliance as soon as possible.

The legal basis is Article 15 of the Railway Transportation Act.
