Legal aspects of bus trips Validity of passenger rights

In which buses are passenger rights valid?

Bus passengers’ rights are basically valid if:

  • A timetable has been published and it is therefore a scheduled bus service.
  • The place of arrival or departure is within the EU (or EEA).
  • The route is at least 250 kilometres long.
  • The majority of the route is covered within the EU (or EEA) or no stop on the route is located outside the EU (or EEA).

The legal bases are Article 2 of Regulation (EU) No 181/2011 and Article 32a of Austrian Law for Bus Services (Kraftfahrliniengesetz).
